Virgin Blog Diary #36
There, where only heroes go! Today we are in a studio in Vancouver called the "Armoury" it is one of the best studios in the world and I didn't know it until today! When I arrived I automatically knew that this was a place of greatness, that is not to say that you automatically record something great because you are working here but the chances are that if you don't it is your fault and no one else!
Bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Kiss and a world of other world successful acts have recorded here. Now whether you like their music or not the fact is that in these hallways they wrote chords and text and found their way to record multi-million selling albums and that is something you feel when you walk in here! I always like the fact that there are no excuses in your way of getting to the music, some studios are old and shabby but have an incredible vibe like an echo of all those musicians who had left their musical impression on the world and there are those studios which have no character because no one has brought the music to break the shell of coldness in the newly built studio.
Once I was in a studio in LA working on lyrics in a tiny side room when the engineer came in to tell me that the producer was looking for me, on the way to the control room the in-house engineer told me that the rumour was that Kurt Cobain had started to shoot heroin in that room when he was recording there. I won't say what text I was working on but I definitely think that it worked it's way into the mood!
Studios are like the homes of ghost musicians, all around the halls are multi-platinum records which inspire and the conversations about the bands are the main topic for days and with the success you get to meet a lot of those musicians and the gold records become like postcards from acquaintances. Being in studio is comical sometimes the music is always at the forefront but the parallel conversations are always about food and food and food. Being stuck in a studio is like a journey through the take-out restaurants of whatever country you are in. See the world through a menu, I have never felt comfortable being a tourist when I am working abroad so it's nice to be able to experience what all the locals experience on the ground level, a good pub in a new city is like a bus ride to the sites. People should be the postcards of every city, state and country!
Well the day has come to an end and we are heading back to the hotel leaving the halls and rooms of where so many musical heroes have once been and gone!
