Virgin Blog Diary #38
Lights, Camera, Action!
Sometimes you work on music so long that it is difficult to know what you really think you need to separate the mind from the heart! What I mean by that is that you need to only allow yourself to hear the emotion if the songs speaks to you in the way that you are trying to tell the story then everything else can be fixed. When I think about our first album the record company was very insistent on releasing the demo version of our first single "Supergirl" but we felt we could do better so we rerecorded the track in Wales with Steve Lyon and then remixed it in Germany until we had the version that was to become the single which was so successful. I was really glad that we didn't release the demo version, as I was extremely hung over the day we were in studio after celebrating the record deal we had signed with virgin records the day before. I could understand what the record company bosses were saying when they said that the Demo had a certain pain in the vocal that the recorded version didn't but this song wasn't about pain it was about a different emotion that I think we really captured in Wales and I wasn't hung over that time and I felt I sang as best as I could.
Another insider is that the record company and the band were together in the studio and the suggestion was that we all go out get drunk until the early morning and that I come back in and sing the song again like the demo. I was obviously not against the experiment but the outcome was that no one worked the next day apart from Steve! For my own part I feel that I learned something that day and that was that all parts belong to the end result. I am sure there is a smart saying for this but what I mean is everything that we went through (good or bad) to make that song the hit it became belonged to its success! This album reminds me of that experience but now it is about every song on the album and not just the single releases because every song has to be a single to make it on this cd, no exceptions!
And sometimes when I am feeling like I am worn out or I am over excited rather than try to recreate a mood to suit the song the mood I am in right now is the way I want to sing because that is as real as I can be, and I think that is the honesty the song deserves! We had the American record company with us in studio today and they were really excited about the songs we recorded in Vancouver and although we started making this album with the American release in mind the album became the centre point and not where it would be released which I think became it's most convincing characteristic.
Music is like the truth you can't ignore. On the other side the recording session started well but the equipment that was meant to arrive this morning from Canada is still stuck in customs and is delaying the work here but hey with every piece of good news you have to be prepared for the reality checks! We are working on a track we wrote in San Jose which is called Broken which is in my opinion a great song about recovering from the bad times and there is always a restart button in life the policy is to learn from our mistakes rather than have to live by them! Ok I'm on a multi-tasking rant which will only have an end if I think of one so as they say in Hollywood "Lights, Camera, Action!!"

just ran across a reference to your band having played prior to Obama's speech in Berlin. Dug a bit (thanks google) and discovered you are a father and a successful musician. Allow me to back peddle - Karen, used to work in a pub in Konstanz.... well, Ken (same pub, same town) and I moved to Ireland, got married and 2 children and several continents later (Willow is 2, Max is 8 months, both absolutely gorgeous little human beings), I discover you and your career after reading a democrat blog. Strange world - I am surprised we didn't bump into you in San Jose! Any way, congratulations and I wish you continued success.
