Virgin Blog Diary #44
The truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth!
Have you noticed how people are leaving the flowers out of their conversation, flowers is a metaphor for slight exaggerations or un-truths, which enhance the real truth. For example "He had a fist the size of a shovel!" or "When we kissed the moon shone brighter and the stars seemed to sparkle!"
I mean these things are in a way true, you can kiss somebody and have a certain clarity afterwards which may seem to you that all things including the stars and the moon are now brighter and some men have extremely large hands but nature and physics do not accommodate fantasy as much as a small lie accommodates a good story!
Today however in a world of financial and political crisis everyone who would normally choose the charming art of exaggeration to push a point have turned to precise truth to avoid anyone misinterpreting or misconstruing the facts! Large words were usually used in debate to impress the audience but now they are used in full knowledge of their meaning to underline statistical proof of an undeniable fact!!
I have to admit in the political world it is refreshing but in the music world it is terrifying for some people who have been hiding from reality and the truth by speaking very fast about nothing with complete competence and no evidence (Also applies to political world sorry!!) The good thing is now that the curtains have been pulled many of the true music lovers and hard working believers are being found in the dessert of unemployment and are returning with their own initiative, their own ideas, their own networks and their own success. The truth has presented itself in falling CD sales leading to a drastic reduction in income for the record industry this truth has revealed many for what they truly are in both a positive and negative sense, which I believe will be a part of a rebirth of the music industry as we know it! The truth and nothing but the truth has removed many who have hidden behind the floral arrangements for many years, and I am glad to see a regeneration within the ranks, the new soldiers of fortune within the industry do not sell you flowers they sell you facts and figures and problems with suggested solutions! Today people want to tell you how dry the toast is but with hard work and a knife of butter we can make it taste moist and rich!
I am a fan of straight talking although I myself suffer from a floral arrangement here and there, (we Irish have a God given right to dress up the truth in it's Sunday best before resenting to the world so I rebuke all self criticism,) but the people I work with have to talk straight because otherwise I feel I am listening to myself which is boring!Psychology used to be a part of communication, "How can I convince them that I am right?" but now if what you have to say is not convincing then DON'T SAY IT!
With the new single out and the album on the way I am travelling a lot doing press, radio and TV promotion the intriguing part of the travelling is the constant chaos of interest in what everyone is saying! People want my opinion on everything the first question is what am I trying to say with the text in the song and the next is my opinion on the American presidential race (having met Obama!)
People are looking for new leaders in small circles people, which they can believe in and in a time of crisis those chosen to lead are soon put to the test to show their merit, and that's good! They say that necessity is the mother of invention if that is the case then this time of crisis has reinvented a core piece of our society, which has avoided us for so long! The Truth The Whole Truth And Nothing But The Truth!
